According to officials, the assessment returned with "finding of no significant impact."
On Dec. 28, Vandenberg celebrated its 51st launch and missile test from West Coast Spaceport and Test Range with the launch of a Starlink mission carried out by a SpaceX Falcon 9 vehicle from Space Launch Complex 4E.
The mission also marked No. 133 overall for SpaceX in 2024.Â
Three scenarios
Outlining three potential scenarios, the DAF leads with a "Proposed Action" to modify SLC-6 for Falcon launches and landings, construct landing zones, and increase Falcon 9 operations at SLC-4Â â with no infrastructure changes there. This would allow up to 100 launches annually, including downrange landings in the Pacific Ocean. SpaceX's horizontal integration facility would also be converted into a hangar.
Dubbed "Alternative 1," DAF outlines a secondary option similar to the Proposed Action that would involve building a new hangar near SLC-6.
A "No Action Alternative" involves no authorization for additional launches or modifications to existing facilities.
The DAF reports the project to be be in alignment with U.S. policy to expand national space capabilities, support defense needs, and promote commercial space industries.
An anticipated project timeline is as follows:
⢠December 2024: Publish Notice of Intent
⢠January 2025: Conduct scoping meetings; solicit public comments
⢠Spring 2025: Conduct studies and evaluations; prepare draft environmental impact statement; publish draft EIS in March; conduct public hearings; solicit public comments on the draft EIS
⢠Fall 2025: Identify preferred alternative; publish final EIS; issue Record of Decision with Selected Alternative
Residents are encouraged to voice concerns and learn about the proposed changes.
The DAF is soliciting public comments for the impact report during a 45-day scoping period that runs through Jan. 27. The "scoping period" kicked off on Dec. 13.
Public scoping meetings are scheduled as follows:
Jan. 14: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1679, Ventura
Jan. 15: Westside Neighborhood Center, Santa Barbara
Jan. 16: Dick DeWees Community Center, Lompoc
Jan. 23: Virtual meeting via Zoom (link to be made available)Â
Public comments can be submitted in English or Spanish in-person at one of the three public scoping meetings, via the online comment form at www.vsfbfalconlauncheis.com, by emailing info@VSFBFalconLaunchEIS.com with the subject line “Falcon EIS,” or via mail ATTN: VSFB Falcon Launch EIS, c/o ManTech International Corporation, 420 Stevens Ave., Suite 100, Solana Beach, CA 92075.
