The current Tesla Model Y looks like a puffed up pre-update Model 3, but spy photos of the facelifted model reveal a sharper look – if one that uses design cues seen on rival brands.

Instead of simply mirroring the recently launched Highland update of the Model 3, the updated Model Y – referred to as Juniper – goes a different way.
In a new set of images of a largely undisguised example shared across social media, we can see the mid-sized electric SUV has a more aggressive look than before.
There's a full-width light bar, giving the updated Model Y's face a look that's more Cybertruck than Model 3.

Tesla is also following a raft of brands including Audi and BMW in adopting a split-level lighting setup.
Likewise, there's a full-width light bar at the rear, another increasingly common design element, plus a sportier rear bumper.
A new wheel design is also visible.

What isn't visible is the interior, though the updated Model Y could follow its sedan sibling in dropping its indicator stalk in favour of buttons on the steering wheel, as well as gaining front seat ventilation.
The Model 3 update also gained a screen for rear-seat passengers.
Only one interior photo has been leaked so far, showing what appears to be perforated leather or leatherette upholstery on the seats, suede-look trim on the door, and a thin strip of ambient lighting.

It's unclear what mechanical changes will be made, but the updated Model 3 received revised suspension including new springs and dampers, plus new subframe mounting points designed to deliver a more comfortable ride.
Model Y sales slumped in Australia in 2024 by 26.1 per cent, though it was still the market's best-selling EV with 21,253 examples delivered.
It's possible many would-be Model Y buyers are holding out for the updated model, though Model 3 sales were down 1.5 per cent despite the arrival of the Highland update.
