After launching from Texas on Thursday, SpaceX lost contact with Starship during its seventh test flight and confirmed the rocket exploded about 10 minutes after liftoff. The test flight of SpaceX's massive rocket successfully launched from Stabase at 5:37 p.m., marking the debut of a new generation of spacecraft equipped with significant upgrades. The Super Heavy booster performed as normal, the company said, making an impressive return to the launch and catch tower arms. This was the second successful catch of the booster to date. However, shortly after that successful recovery, SpaceX officials reported losing contact with the rocket toward the end of its ascend. The goal was for the spacecraft to land in the Indian Ocean, but it was later revealed that the Starship had exploded after suffering anomalies."Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly during its ascent burn," SpaceX posted via X.According to initial data gathered by the company, this rapid disassembly happened after a fire developed in the aft section of the ship. The explosion resulted in a bright, colorful spectacle in the sky, which could be seen in Turks and Caicos. One user posted video of the explosion to X, saying, "This is not right. Something happened. Something exploded."After the explosion, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that planes had to be redirected away from the area where debris from the rocket was falling. Many flights had to be diverted because of low fuel while holding outside of those impacted areas.SpaceX said Starship flew within its designated launch corridor, just as all U.S. launches do to protect the public on the ground, water and air. According to the company, any surviving pieces of debris would have fallen into the designated hazard area. The FAA confirmed that there were no reports of injury, but did say it is working with SpaceX and local officials to confirm public property damage. On Friday, the FAA announced it would require SpaceX to conduct its own mishap investigation, which will require the company to determine the root cause of the incident and identify proper corrective actions. While SpaceX leads the investigation itself, the FAA said it would be involved in every step of the process and will have to approve the company's final report, including any corrective actions.Officials at SpaceX emphasized that Thursday's launch was a test and that they would use the insights gained from the incident to improve the Starship spacecraft."The first Starship flight test of 2025 flew with ambitious goals: seeking to repeat our previous success of launching and catching the world’s most powerful launch vehicle while putting a redesigned and upgraded Starship through a rigorous set of flight demonstrations," SpaceX said. "It served as a reminder that development testing, by definition, can be unpredictable."
