Tech mogul Elon Musk revealed that US President Donald Trump had requested his company, SpaceX, to urgently bring back two Boeing Starliner astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore. Notably, the two NASA astronauts have been stranded at the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024.
Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched aboard Boeing's new Starliner capsule in June for a week-long test flight. However, technical issues with the spacecraft led to an extended stay at the International Space Station (ISS), leaving the astronauts stranded in space.
In response, US President Donald Trump, shortly after returning to office, accused former President Joe Biden of "abandoning" Williams and Wilmore. In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that he had asked Elon Musk and SpaceX to rescue the astronauts, who had been waiting at the ISS for months. Trump expressed hope for their safe return and wished Musk good luck on the mission.
The @POTUS has asked @SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so.
Terrible that the Biden administration left them there so long.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk called it "terrible" that Williams and Wilmore were left "stranded" at the International Space Station (ISS) for so long by the Biden administration, despite NASA having enlisted SpaceX months earlier for their return as part of the Crew-9 mission.
"The @POTUS has asked @SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so," Musk said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
For the unversed, Wilmore and Williams launched to the ISS aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft in June 2024, with the flight originally intended to last a week. However, technical issues with the spacecraft led to a prolonged stay at the station. After weeks of analysis by NASA and Boeing, it was deemed too risky to return the astronauts on the Starliner. As a result, NASA requested SpaceX to bring them home aboard the Crew-9 capsule.

In August 2024, SpaceX agreed to take over the return mission, with Crew-9 planned for the astronauts' homecoming by February 2025. However, delays in December due to work on the Dragon spacecraft pushed the return until late March 2025, after Crew-10 reached the ISS. Despite these delays, Musk's recent post suggested the possibility of an earlier return for Williams and Wilmore, with the Crew Dragon capsule "Freedom" potentially departing the ISS sooner than expected.
