Apple's iPhones can now test SpaceX's Starlink direct-to-cell technology, providing satellite coverage for mobile devices. T-Mobile, a key partner in the initiative, confirmed the eligibility of iPhones running iOS 18.3 for the ongoing trial.
T-Mobile and SpaceX have been testing the Starlink-powered cellular network since receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November 2023. Initially limited to select Android smartphones, the trial has expanded to include iPhones. Currently, the service supports "text via satellite," with voice and data capabilities expected in future updates.
According to Bloomberg, Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile secretly collaborated to integrate this technology into Apple's latest software update. Neither Apple nor SpaceX has commented on the development.
The FCC had previously granted SpaceX and T-Mobile permission to activate Starlink's direct-to-cell connectivity to assist areas in North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. This move underscores the potential of satellite-based mobile networks to enhance connectivity in remote and disaster-stricken regions.
This partnership marks a significant advancement in mobile communication, allowing users to stay connected even in areas without traditional network coverage. By integrating satellite connectivity with smartphones, the initiative aims to revolutionize global mobile access.
