[ Florida Highway Patrol ] Yesterday The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating to determine who was behind the wheel of a Tesla that struck and killed a man on the shoulder of Interstate 275 on Friday night who had stopped to change a flat tire. The incident occurred at 8:19 p.m. Friday on southbound I-275 near Fourth Street N. A 37-year-old Lakeland man was changing the tire of a Mazda 3 when he was hit by a driver who “failed to move over,” the highway patrol said in a news release. The driver fled the scene. The man who was changing the tire was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Troopers said they believed the vehicle was a 2021 or newer Tesla Model X, which has “gull wing” doors. Troopers on Wednesday said they had found the Tesla at a residence in Manatee County. They said it was a 2024 Tesla Model X. No other details were released. “Troopers continue to investigate the incident,” a news release from the agency states. Troopers said anyone with information that could assist the investigation can call *FHP (*347) or Crime Stoppers at **TIPS.
