My 2024 Tesla Cybertruck never ceases to amaze me.
Have you ever experienced the thrill of discovering a hidden gem in your new car? Joe Fay (@jf.okay), a proud owner of a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck, certainly has. Here is his unique story, which I stumbled upon while browsing the Tesla Cybertruck TikTok page.
Joe says,
"I've owned a Tesla Cybertruck for about a year, and I had no idea this feature existed. It never ceases to amaze me."
Has This Happened to You?
I'm sure many car or truck owners have found themselves in a situation where they need to fill up with gas or charge their electric car and wish the gas door or charge port was on the other side.
It never fails that when you pull into fill up, the gas filler door is on the wrong side. So you pull back out, circle the island, and sure enough, someone else pulls in right in front of you. It can be infuriating.
What New Feature Is Joe Talking About?
Now imagine buying a new Tesla Cybertruck, and when you purchased your new electric truck, they never told you there were two electric charge ports. You know about the charge port hidden in the wheel cladding on the driver's side because they showed that to you.
Imagine the excitement of buying a new Tesla Cybertruck, only to discover a hidden treasure-a second electric charge port on the passenger side rear wheel cover. Joe stumbled upon this secret while washing his new truck, and now he's bursting with the need to share this thrilling revelation with everyone.
Joe is like a little kid on Christmas morning when he finds the toy he wants Santa to bring.
Imagine Joe's Excitement
Joe says, "I've owned my 2024 Tesla Cybertruck for about a year now, and I had no idea that this feature existed. Tesla, you did a really good job of hiding it."
"So, if you didn't know, the Cybertruck has a charging port on the left side of the truck, and you can open it just by pushing the charge port door, and it automatically opens."
"However, I had no idea that if you come over to the other side, it also has a charge port right there, so that means I can charge the truck on both sides."
"So here it is on the truck's right side, the driver's side; I can plug it in right there. What I didn't know is that I can tap the other side or push the charger right here, and it will also open the charging door, and there is a second charger on the right side of the truck."
"This is absolutely crazy, and I didn't know there was a second charger. Tesla did such a good job hiding it that I was unaware of this great feature. So, now I can pull up to the charger in any direction and charge my Cyberetruck from either side. How cool is that?"
Joe concludes, "It's insane. I've owned the Cybertruck for a year, and I had no idea."
However, the Cybertruck Only Has One Charging Port
Is Joe's electric truck a unicorn?
After some investigating, Joe made the video as a spoof. When I watched his TikTok video, he had a wristband on his right hand in the first part, and when he walked around the Cybertruck to the passenger side, the wristband was on his left hand.
With a sleight of hand, Joe inverted the video to make it look like the Cybertruck has a charging port on the passenger side. Joe wanted to try his hand at being a magician. Now you see it, now you see it again.
Lessons Learned From This Cybertruck Story
The obvious lesson is, don't believe everything you see or hear. The internet is full of false information from a number of sources. I don't believe Joe is trying to give false information; he's showing us that we shouldn't believe everything that's out there about the Cybertruck. Or, he could be pointing out, that it would be helpful if EVs had a charging port on both sides of the vehicle.
The Cybertruck's Charging Port Location is Different Than Other EVs
Why did Tesla hide the Cybertruck's charging port above the rear wheel?
CarsDirect states, "We really don't know why Tesla put the charging port where it did. The Cybertruck's odd taillight and high-up placement probably stopped the automaker from hiding the charging port there as it does in its other EVs."
Where Is the Charging Port On Other Electric Trucks?
The location of the Cybertruck's charging port differs from other electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and GMC Hummer EV Pickup.
The charging port on the Ford F-150 Lightning is positioned in front of and below the driver's side mirror, and the Rivian R1T has a charging port located just underneath the front left headlight. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Chevrolet Silverado EV have charging ports located directly in front of the left rear taillight. All of these pickup trucks have their charging ports on an end of the vehicle that's for ease of use.
Why Did Tesla Put the Cybertruck's Charge Port In an Odd Location?
CarsDirect says, "It could have something to do with cost. Integrating the charging port into the fender could be cheaper for Tesla when it comes to manufacturing. Or, it could be that Tesla CEO Elon Musk just wanted to do something different."
Final Thoughts and Questions for You
I think it's the latter. Elon Musk wanted the Cybertruck to be so different from any other electric truck that he made it as controversial as possible. He succeeded.
Musk says the Ford trucks are boring. A report from Business Insider says, "Elon Musk apparently isn't a fan of Ford's traditional pickup trucks, and his distaste for the vehicles spawned the Cybertruck, according to the billionaire's biographer, Walter Isaacson.
Isaacson says, "He's sitting there with his design chief Franz von Holzhausen and looking at a Ford truck, and he said, 'No, these things are boring."
Isaacson added. "And everybody's pushing back on him at this meeting. He (Musk) finally says, 'Yeah, stop it. We're gonna do it. We're gonna make it edgy."
