Are Tesla's doors too light?
That's what new owner Scott McAlister says about his new 2025 Tesla Model Y Performance. I found this interesting post when I was checking out the Tesla Model Y's Facebook page. Scott loves his new performance car 90 days in and has some excellent observations for other potential Tesla Model Y buyers.
Scott says,
"As I approach the first 90 days of owning my 2025 Model Y Performance, I have a few observations during my first 4,223 miles."
2025 Model Y Performance, the First 90 Days
1. I absolutely LOVE driving this thing! My first two cars were an 87 Camaro Z28, then a 94 Z28, but the last several vehicles were all trucks (Tundra). It's just so fun zipping through traffic.
2. I charge at home and have been charging to only 80%. It typically shows a range of 224 miles. I found myself watching it for the first few weeks, but I have since not even thought about it. Living in a smaller town north of Dallas (and working from home), I don't have to drive too much daily, and the charging is a breeze.
Besides my road trip to Houston for work and the first 5 days of ownership, until the charger was installed, I've not had to charge in the wild. If you prepare in advance, you can adjust your capacity if you think you need it.
3. Accessorize! The first purchase was ceramic tint for all windows. Hopefully, this helps in the Texas summers! TBD. I added carbon fiber mirror covers and blacked out emblems on the exterior.
I added Tesstuff floor mats (which are super durable so far, though I need to clean them), Spigen console trays, and jack pads. Basenor trunk organizers with carpet match cover. I love the unified looks!
Scott Only Has One Negative
4. The only negative I can think of right now is how light the doors are. My kids are used to slamming my [Toyota Tundra] truck doors shut, so it pains me a little when they forget and slam them!
Are Tesla's Doors Too Light?
According to discussions on Reddit, some users do perceive Tesla doors as being "too light" due to their seemingly effortless opening and closing mechanism, which can sometimes lead to concerns about potential safety issues, particularly in a crash situation; however, Tesla claims their doors are designed to meet all necessary safety standards despite the light feel.
Key points from Reddit discussions:
Light feel:
Many users comment on how easily Tesla doors open and close, making them feel "flimsy" compared to other vehicles.
Safety concerns:
Some users worry that the light feel might indicate a potential weakness in the door structure during a collision.
Design considerations:
Tesla engineers prioritize smooth operation and aesthetics in the door design, which could contribute to the perceived lightness.
In the comment section, Scott isn't alone in kids slamming doors. Can you relate?
Ric Berven says I'm always on my kids about slamming the doors!
John Kim - I've yelled at my kids for slamming the door, too!
Edgar Hernandez - That blue is nice! I completely agree with the kids slamming the doors! Cheers to many more miles!
Luke Cure' - hahaha my kids do the same thing.
Final Thoughts and Questions For Tesla Owners
All dads don't like it when their kids slam the car doors regardless of what vehicle it is. Your car is your pride and joy, and you take extra care of it. So, Scott is not alone.
A performance car should be lighter than a regular car, and the doors are one area where Tesla may have tried to lighten the car. The Tesla Model Y is the second lightest model in the Tesla lineup, with the Model 3 being the lightest. This lightweight design contributes to the car's impressive performance and range.
