Alain Roy, a former Musk and Tesla enthusiast in Quebec, Canada, has had enough of Musk’s strange behavior. Before Trump’s inauguration, he had a reservation for a Cybertruck—making that his third Tesla. He drives a Model S, and his wife drives a Model Y.
When he saw Musk’s Nazi-esque salute in January, it pushed him to cut all ties with the South African. He decided the best way to hurt him was to devalue the cars.
“I love my Teslas, it’s Musk I don’t like,” he told Global News. “That sign was too much for me. I immediately canceled my Cybertruck and both my Teslas are up for sale right now.”
In Canada, there isn’t a known group of people looking to vandalism groups threatening to harm or place stickers on Teslas like in California, but he isn’t willing to wait around and find out.
Tesla club head says selling the EVs won’t hurt Musk
Gad Elmoznino, the head of Club Tesla Quebec, remarked it’s a shame that Musk has such a large impact on the public’s opinion of the company.
He said the company employs tons of “brilliant” people, and while he doesn’t like Musk and his antics, he can respect the company as a whole.
“I’ve seen him do crazy things before that I was not comfortable with. But it really comes down to the product,” he said. People like Roy, he said, are within their rights to sell their vehicles and disassociate from the company—but it won’t make a difference.
“Let’s face it, me not buying a Tesla tomorrow is in no way going to affect Musk personally and no way going to change his behavior,” he added.
Viewers sympathized with Roy’s choice to sell his Teslas
Other Tesla owners commented on Global News’ YouTube video on the story, and many took a similar stance. One viewer noted they felt stuck between a rock and a hard place.
“I never thought I’d be selling my Tesla, but here we are. With everything going on, I just can’t justify supporting Musk anymore,” wrote a viewer. “The problem is, these cars aren’t holding value like they used to, and I’m looking at a serious financial hit.”
Another praised him for following his moral compass.
“That’s called self-respect, love for country, and being congruous with his own principles,” a viewer wrote. “He put his money where his mouth is. Bravo, man!”
Someone else wrote that selling the EVs might not harm Musk, but it shows integrity.
“I admire M. Roy’s stand. It’s easy to argue that one purchase won’t make a difference. Maybe not, but a mass of principled people using their power as consumers will be felt. That’s the point!” they wrote. “We each need to consider what we are contributing to with our individual choices.”
