CEO Elon Musk referenced the company’s Robovan vehicle earlier this week after a long while, bringing the electric vehicle meant to transport a larger crowd back to the fore of public attention.
What Happened: Tesla unveiled the Robovan in October along with its two-seater Cybercab. Both vehicles have no side mirrors or pedals and are dedicated to autonomous driving, the company then said.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk then said that the Cybercab will enter production in 2026 and be priced below $30,000. The CEO, however, did not provide a timeline for the start of production of the Robovan.
The Robovan, unlike Tesla’s other offerings, can transport up to 20 people or cargo, the company said during its unveiling. Inspired by Art Deco trains designed during the early 20th century, it immediately looks like it lacks wheels owing to its extremely low ground clearance achieved by having an automatic load-leveling suspension that raises ride height and lowers it based on road conditions.
During its unveiling, the company did not provide key details on the vehicle including its price point but its unusual design raised intrigue among enthusiasts.
Designed For ‘Big Families’: Musk, in November, said that the Robovan is aimed at bigger families. The vehicle, he then said, is “in development.” The maximum number of people a Tesla vehicle in production can presently accommodate is limited to seven.
Earlier this week, Musk referred to the vehicle again, saying that the company is building the Robovan to accommodate all his kids.
“Ahem, what do you think this is for?,” Musk wrote in response to a satirical post on X that the billionaire is developing a homeschooler van to fit all his kids.
