Tesla is recalling another set of cars due to a potential crash risk.
The carmaker recalled its 2023 Model 3 and Model Y cars sold in the U.S. because if voltage exceeds the car’s limit, it can cause it to lose power steering when it slows down to 0 mph and potentially cause an accident.
The loss of power steering may continue even if the driver accelerates over 0 mph. However, drivers will still be able to use manual steering and will receive an alert on their dashboard.
The recalled vehicles have electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS) and operating software prior to 2023.38.4.
The carmaker has not received any reports of the failing power steering causing accidents.
“Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to the condition,” according to the company.
Affected car owners don’t need to schedule a service appointment with their dealers. But, they will receive a letter in the mail in the next few weeks.
Tesla released an over-the-air software update for free to remedy the issue.
Car owners can check if their Tesla vehicle is affected by checking the VIN number with either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools.
Also, they can check their vehicle’s current software version by tapping “Controls” and then, “Software” on the car’s touchscreen or at the bottom of the home screen in the Tesla app.
Cars with versions 2023.38.4 or later are not included in the recall. If older software versions are still installed, owners must update the software via this menu.
If the issue continues, Tesla urges owners of the recalled cars to schedule a service appointment to correct it.
