Credit: Brooke Crothers The new Tesla Model Y is trickling into a Los Angeles Tesla store, boding well for the delivery of Tesla’s newest car in the coming weeks. The Tesla store and service center in North Hollywood had three new Model Ys as of Friday. Officially, deliveries won’t start until March. Full Self Driving on the new Model Y On Friday, I had a chance to test drive the new Model Y with v13 of Full Self Driving, aka FSD. (I forgot to check the exact version number). I was impressed with v13 and would now go so far to say it is a lot closer to being on par with Waymo’s driverless taxis, which I also used Friday in downtown Beverly Hills – and have used many times in Los Angeles. I would not have said that three months ago when I was sampling v12. The new Model Y with v13 negotiated some very congested and narrow backstreets off Sherman Way in North Hollywood – where it had to dodge chaotic oncoming traffic that occasionally encroached onto my side of the road – and very skillfully negotiated a very dicey left turn across traffic on Sherman Way. In the latter case, a parked car blocked visibility (at least for me) of heavy traffic coming from the left while a car in the middle (turning) lane temporarily blocked the path in front of the Y. Plus, there was heavy traffic coming from the right. The Y patiently waited for the right time to make the left turn across traffic. It was impressive. I had limited time with Y (30 minutes) and was focused almost exclusively on FSD so this is hardly a review but I did notice how quiet the cabin was. MORE FOR YOU
