The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket bolted skyward Tuesday evening from Cape Canaveral. Then a bit more than eight minutes later, the first-stage booster landed in the Bahamas, completing its unique international circuit.
"This is the first time that a rocket has taken off from one country, gone to space and landed in another country!" SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet.
SpaceX's groundbreaking Starlink 10-12 mission lifted off at 6:21 p.m. EST from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Payload goal: Deliver 23 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit.
After stage separation, the Falcon 9 booster descended and settled for a fiery landing aboard SpaceX's drone ship Just Read the Instructions, which was stationed in Exuma Sound in the Bahamas.
