Following a disastrous earnings call summing up a problematic first quarter, Tesla is making some changes. For starters, CEO Elon Musk announced he would reduce his time at DOGE to focus on righting the ship at Tesla. In addition to the power shift, the automaker will go through building cheaper versions of its existing lineup. What’s more, a recent drone video captured a look at what might be the stripped-back Tesla ‘Model 2’ (partially) in the flesh.
A drone video caught a glimpse of what might very well be the fabled Tesla ‘Model 2’ or ‘Model Q’
New Teslas are on the way. Yes, plural. During a recent earnings call, the brand’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, said that would-be Tesla buyers with their mind on their money can expect at least two stripped-back, fewer-frills versions of the existing lineup. That points to two of the most likely scenarios: more affordable, less refined, single-motor variants of the current Model Y and Model 3. And if recent drone footage is credible, these budget-minded Tesla models, like the rumored “Model 2,” could be around the corner.
A drone operator under the YouTube handle “Met God in Wilderness” spied a couple of unusual suspects at the automaker’s Fremont factory. According to Teslarati, some footage showed a vehicle similar to the current refreshed Model Y, albeit with a narrower roof. This could be the cheaper Model Y that the powers at Tesla are hinting at.
What’s more, later footage from the same drone operator showed yet another apparently pre-production vehicle. However, rather than sporting the crossover proportions of the Model Y lookalike, this one had a sloping rear end, perhaps characteristic of a car instead of a small SUV.

Despite Elon Musk’s earlier objections, Tesla is slated to build cheaper, drivable EVs
The sightings support the recent claims that Tesla would include cheaper, more bare-bones EVs to widen its market appeal starting later this year. And, like the cryptic cars in the drone video, the vehicles don’t look all that dissimilar to the existing Model 3 and Model Y. “The models that come out in the next months will resemble in form and shape the cars that we currently make,” Moravy said.
