Just when we thought he had reached the limit of his innovation, considering all the things happening to his company, Elon Musk has resurfaced again, and this time around with yet another “promise”. This “promise” is an idea that was once talked about and is now being brought up again; Musk plans to build an undersea tunnel worth $20 trillion connecting New York and London. Elon Musk is not new to the world of innovation, and he wants to break the barriers again. Perhaps $20 trillion could change the Earth’s map. If implemented, this transatlantic tunnel will be the most expensive infrastructure in human history.
The Economic Times reported that, according to Benzinga, the underwater project will stretch more than 3000 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, which will definitely need strong engineering solutions to make it happen. Additionally, there are no tangible or concrete plans for this claim made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk; this includes no government approvals, funding, regulations or any form of progress. Is he being delusional?
Within the next 10 years, New York may become the underwater capital of the world
Musk has unveiled an underwater project affecting this American state. New York is set to be the greatest beneficiary if this project comes to life; however, there will be a lot of changes that will come with this advantage. Infrastructure changes, new budgets, renovations, outsourcing engineers and contractors, and, of course, job opportunities.
A portion of the state will have to be renovated to accommodate cutting-edge Hyperloop stations, engineering terminals, and maritime access points if the idea is approved. So much talent, globally, will be drawn into the state by this project because it will position New York as an international travelling hub as economists, tourists, and urban developers play a role to make this come to fruition.
According to Benzinga, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s remarks are related to his advocacy of hyperloop technology, which eventually seeks to employ vacuum-sealed tubes for fast transport. But at the same time, over a decade after Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, first proposed the idea of the hyperloop, no commercial systems are in use, which has been concerning; hence, they now call his company “boring”.
Other countries are planning on implementing similar projects
America has it all planned out, and so does Europe. Norway, a country in Northern Europe, is building something tangible. In November 2024, they began construction on the Rogfast project, which is expected to be the longest and deepest underwater road tunnel in the world. The plan is for it to connect Denmark and Germany. The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is the longest road and rail tunnel in the world and is expected to open in 2029.
If Musk gets serious and executes this idea, it will transform the whole world, particularly New York. Certain segments of the economy will be uplifted, such as Travel, trade, medical logistics, and international cooperation, just to name a few. Think about it: in less than two hours, export activities can take place and various foods or items can be transported without having to wait for days or weeks.
Travel, trade, and international cooperation could all be redefined by this tunnel
While this stands as a brilliant initiative, we cannot ignore that discussions surrounding this idea have people criticising it, particularly Elon Musk, who is now being perceived as one who speaks but does not take any action. Assertions of viability point to the enormous financial and technical obstacles that such a project would require.
Even though Elon Musk has proven his capacity to innovate with smaller projects like the Las Vegas Convention Centre Loop, the Transatlantic tunnel is still mostly a pipe dream for the time being. The Earth’s map might not change overnight, but with $20 trillion on the table, it could.
