What happened at the Gigafactory? Overeem, from Orlando, Florida, was arrested by the Travis County Sheriff's Office after threatening to shoot people during a Tesla Cybertruck delivery event on Nov. 30, 2023. Tesla was notified a week earlier about an Instagram group chat where Overeem allegedly made threats to Giga Texas. The sheriff's office started investigating the threats on Nov. 28 after it was notified that no formal police report had been filed. That same morning, Overeem's car was spotted by traffic cameras driving on Highway 290 in southwest Austin. The next morning, Overeem's phone pinged along Almarion Way in West Austin. Authorities believe Overeem -who has no ties to Travis County- drove from Florida to Austin to potentially carry out the attack. Why was Overeem moved from the Travis County jail? Overeem remained in the Travis County jail until April 2024, when he was moved to house arrest in Florida. His mother, Paula Marie Aponte, testified in court in April 2024, asking the judge to lower her son's bond so she could afford it and to treat his mental health symptoms at home. Aponte also testified that Overeem has had ADHD and anxiety since a young child, but that he had never consistently taken medication for it. She said in 2022, she started noticing her son's intense obsession and hyperfixation with Elon Musk. Alvarenga agreed to lower Overeem's bond from $300,000 to $200,000, adding that he would need to be on house arrest and continue with mental health treatment and medications if he were to be released.
