(Image: © Getty Images) Over the weekend, social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) suffered the after-effects of a mass outage that took place on Thursday, May 22. Reports began to spike on the tracking platform DownDetector at around 2pm Eastern/11am Pacific on Thursday. At its height, the site received around 2,500 reports of problems with the platform on both desktop and mobile. X briefly came back online for a few hours Saturday morning before users began experiencing problems again. Issues with the app and website were even more widespread this time, with DownDetector reports reaching a height of 25,000. The app and website appear to be back online as of Saturday afternoon. Users reported a range of problems, from being unable to sign in to not receiving direct messages. A lot of the issues appear to be resolved, and the platform is back to full functionality for many users. Statement from X X's official engineering account acknowledged the problem on Thursday and explained the problem was due to a data center outage. “X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today,” the account posted “We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.” X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today. On May 23, Wired reported anonymous sources saying the outage was caused by a fire at a data center in Hillsboro, Oregon.
