One Dragon in SpaceX's manifest is currently assigned to fly private company Axiom Space's next crew to the space station no earlier than Spring 2025.
Perhaps there's an option to take that Dragon and give it to Crew-10, flying them up earlier and returning Williams and Wilmore home faster. But that seems unlikely considering the day after Musk and Trump made their social media announcements, the Axiom launch was officially confirmed as still on target for spring.
Former NASA astronaut, Peggy Whitson, will command the mission. Flying with her will be: mission pilot, Shubhanshu Shukla, and mission specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu.
While Axiom 4 does not have an official launch date, using this Dragon for Crew-10 would significantly delay the mission.
Fram2 mission SpaceX Dragon
Are there any other Dragons available? Yes, there's a Dragon being planned to carry another mission — the Fram2 mission.
That mission is currently set to launch no earlier than March of 2025. Privately funded, it will be the first crewed mission to orbit Earth's poles.
The crew is training now at SpaceX headquarters, but there have not been any recent updates on the status of the mission or an official launch date.
However, it's unknown if the Dragon slated for this mission could be readied in time for a very different International Space Station journey.
Crew-8 SpaceX Dragon
This leaves one possible spacecraft left. The last Dragon to return from space was Endeavour with NASA's Crew-8. With Crew-8 splashing down in October 2024, it is not known if that Dragon could be ready to fly again before March.
SpaceX has not publicly released Dragon spacecraft turn around times.
How did Starliner astronauts get in this situation?
First off, it is important to note that the astronauts are not truly stuck in space. The Crew-9 Dragon spacecraft, which they were already slated to return on in late March, is currently docked to the International Space Station. Should there be an emergency, they could return to Earth at anytime.
Williams and Wilmore are fully integrated into NASA's Crew-9. They are assisting with science and space station operations.
The duo even preformed a spacewalk on Thursday, during which Williams broke the record for the most hours a female has spent on a spacewalk. That title was formerly held by upcoming Axiom 4 commander, Peggy Whitson.
It's not clear what Trump's and Musk's plan to return the two astronauts as soon as possible calls for or if it's really any different than the plan laid out before Trump took office.
