Megawatt
An energy measurement for electricity. xAI's 3231 Paul R. Lowry Road facility is using two 150-megawatt substations (one is still under construction) to power the facility. One megawatt is equal to 1 million watts.
Nvidia
A California-based computer manufacturing company. The types of GPUs xAI is using for its supercomputer are designed by the company. Those chips are classified by generation. Those generations are called: H100, H1200, Blackwell and Ruben. The Blackwell and Ruben generations are being released in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
Both the Blackwell and Ruben generations will require higher energy demands than the H100 and H200 chips. In June 2024, University of Memphis professor and artificial intelligence research Santosh Kumar compared the energy usage of a single H100 chip to that of a household.
Substation
A term used for electricity infrastructure. A substation usually consists of power transformers, which serve as conduits for electricity between sources. xAI is designing two substations for use at its Paul R. Lowry Road facility.
In May, the company also announced a pending partnership with Hyosung HICO for power transformers, which would be used to build additional substations.
Turbines
In this case the term is referring to "natural gas turbines." Such equipment has been used to help power xAI in Memphis.
