WASHINGTON (TNND) —
Elon Musk backed down from a threat to decommission a space capsule NASA relies on to transport astronauts and supplies back and forth from the International Space Station in a high-profile feud with President Donald Trump that included a flurry of insults and threats from each side.
Musk’s threat to take SpaceX’s Dragon capsule out of commission came after Trump suggested the government might cut billions in government contracts spread across the several companies the tech billionaire and former cost-cutting chief oversees. In response to Trump’s quip about Musk’s federal contracts, Musk wrote on X his company "will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.”
He retracted that sentiment in another post several hours later in response to another user on X that suggested he “cool off and take a step back.”
“Ok we won’t decommission Dragon,” Musk wrote Thursday night in response.
If Musk were to follow through on his threat, it would have put NASA in a bind as SpaceX is the only American company capable of transporting crew and supplies via its Dragon capsule.
NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens said in an X post that the agency “will continue to execute upon the President’s vision for the future of space. We will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure the President’s objectives in space are met.”
The only other option available for traveling between Earth and the Space Station is Russia’s Soyuz capsules, one of the few remaining areas of U.S.-Russia cooperation after year of escalating tensions over the war in Ukraine.
Boeing’s Starliner capsule has been grounded since last year when a test flight went so poorly two NASA astronauts had their mission extended by months until they could get a ride back to Earth on board a SpaceX flight.
Space travel is just one piece of the potential fallout between the two seemingly former allies after Musk took to X to criticize Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill,” a massive tax cut and spending bill he is trying to get the Senate to get to his desk by July 4. Musk started Thursday’s feud by calling the bill a "disgusting abomination."
