As wildfires continue to affect regions across Canada, SpaceX’s Starlink is stepping in to keep people connected.
The satellite internet provider has announced it is offering one month of free service to residents in fire-impacted areas, a move that could make a real difference for those cut off from traditional networks (via Tesla North).
Unlike cable or cellular internet, Starlink doesn’t rely on ground-based infrastructure like fibre-optic cables or cell towers—the very systems that can be damaged or destroyed by fire. Instead, Starlink uses satellites in low-Earth orbit to beam internet directly to small dishes installed at homes or remote locations. That makes it a valuable tool in emergencies when land-based networks go down.
Who’s Eligible:
Current customers: Starlink has automatically applied a one-month service credit to accounts in wildfire zones. No action is needed.
Paused or cancelled users: These users have also received a credit equivalent to their previous service plan, allowing them to reactivate service during the crisis.
New customers in affected areas: Anyone who purchases a new Starlink kit can request free service through July 5, 2025, by contacting support.
Damaged equipment: Starlink will replace wildfire-damaged kits at no cost. Customers just need to reach out to support for help.
Why Starlink Stands Out During Disasters
Starlink’s satellite-based design is particularly useful in rural or remote communities where wildfires can take out local infrastructure or delay repairs. Even when the power is out or roads are closed, Starlink users can often stay online — as long as they have a way to power the dish and modem (such as a generator or battery backup).
While smoke and heavy fire conditions can occasionally interfere with satellite signals, Starlink remains one of the most resilient internet options during natural disasters, especially for people outside major urban centres.
