Officials with the State of Tennessee and Elon Musk's The Boring Co. have engaged in discussions about a tunnel to connect downtown Nashville and the Nashville International Airport, Nashville Business Journal reports.
Citing multiple sources, NBJ reports the effort â if it materializes â would take cues from The Boring Co.'s Las Vegas tunnel network that allows for fleets of Musk's Tesla electric vehicles to transport passengers (read here).
The Business Journal reports various details â including a specific tunnel route, a price tag and how the project would be financed â are uncertain, with the discussions between the two parties having commenced a few months ago.
A future tunnel connecting downtown and BNA could cover up to 10 miles, depending on the specific route and connection points, NBJ reports. The southwest segment of downtown and northeast portion of the airport are located about five miles from one another.
This is not the first time underground transit has been proposed for Nashville. In 2017-18, then-Mayor Megan Barry and her administration crafted a plan that would have delivered a 1.8-mile subway line positioned below the heart of downtown. The subway was estimated to have cost about $900 million and was part of a comprehensive $5.4 billion mass transit plan that failed to materializes after voters rejected it via a referendum.
