Tesla CEO Elon Musk has dismissed Omead Afshar, the company’s vice president of manufacturing and operations, as the electric automaker struggles with declining vehicle sales and growing political controversy. Afshar oversaw key global markets, including North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and was considered a close Musk ally.
His departure follows that of Milan Kovac, former head of Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot program, who stepped down earlier this month, citing a desire to spend more time with family. Musk publicly expressed appreciation for Kovac’s work.
Tesla’s stock has fallen 19% this year, sharply underperforming the broader tech sector. Sales in Europe dropped for a fifth consecutive month in May, as competition from lower-priced Chinese electric vehicles continues to increase.
Afshar was previously investigated internally in 2022 over procurement of rare construction materials, including specialty glass for a confidential Musk project. Despite the controversy, he later worked at SpaceX before returning to Tesla and receiving a promotion.
His firing also comes as Tesla faces reputational challenges linked to Musk’s political activity. Musk has spent nearly $300 million supporting Donald Trump’s re-election campaign and has backed efforts to slash federal government agencies. Internationally, he has endorsed Germany’s far-right AfD party, drawing backlash and raising concerns among investors and consumers.
Although no longer with the company, Afshar’s social media still lists him as a Tesla executive, and he recently praised Musk for launching a pilot Robotaxi program in Austin, Texas.
With executive turnover mounting, sales slipping, and political tensions rising, Tesla faces increasing uncertainty in the months ahead.
