Tesla has shared a video of what it says was the first autonomous Model Y delivery to a new owner. The delivery took place around 30 minutes away from the Tesla Gigafactory from which its journey began.
The video comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared details on the X social network, saying that the trip included highways and arrived ahead of schedule.
Congratulations to the Tesla AI teams, both software & AI chip design!
There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway
Tesla’s Head of Tesla AI team Ashok Elluswamy, said that the Model Y reached a maximum speed of more than 70 mph. Tesla also confirmed that the Model Y that delivered itself was running a special version of software that is also being used by its Robotaxis. That software is not available to general Tesla owners.
Once the delivery is completed, vehicles that have been delivered autonomously will be rolled back to a standard version of the Model Y software. This means that the Robotaxi version will only be used to complete the delivery process.
