Despite the quick rise of the company town of Starbase and a friendlier regulatory environment under the Trump administration, progress has slowed on Starship development and testing after the failures of its last three flights and a June 18 explosion during testing of the rocket's upper stage. Nobody was injured in the blast that hurled Starship debris hundreds of yards, including across the Rio Grande River and into Mexico.
On June 23, a crane collapsed while apparently cleaning up debris from the explosion. No injuries were reported, but the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
The company hasn’t said when it expects to resume its launches.
The Gigabay project is the most expensive infrastructure project at Starbase so far, vastly exceeding the $164 million cost of the combination rocket plant and office building, dubbed Starfactory, that’s mostly complete. The 380-foot-tall “specialized industrial facility” will tower nearly 100 feet over the other Starship production and maintenance structures at the private firm’s rocket complex.
The project is fueled with at least $7.5 million in public funds from a Texas Space Commission grant awarded in March. Kathy Lueders, Starbase’s general manager, is a member of that body’s board of directors.
SpaceX is building a similar structure at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center as it prepares to expand Starship operations to Florida. The Florida Gigabay will be 815,00 square feet, according to SpaceX. That’s about 115,000 square feet larger than the Texas version.
With cranes that can lift 400 tons, Gigabays will allow the company to work on both Starships and their Super Heavy boosters. They’ll also have work and meeting space on the top floor.
They’ll be 11 times larger than the “megabay” facilities at Starbase, which are currently the company’s largest such buildings, SpaceX said. To make space for the Gigabay at Starbase, SpaceX recently demolished a 266-foot-tall structure that was known as the “High Bay.”
The construction continues as the city of Starbase establishes itself.
The community will host a Fourth of July celebration featuring fireworks and a live band at Boca Chica Beach from 7-10 p.m. Friday.
