Impact on used Cybertruck market? Used Cybertruck prices to date have been exorbitant. Earlier this summer, the Cybertruck was the second most-searched used EV with an eye-watering $143,796 average used price, according to Cars.com. And the average used price as of August is still high, exceeding new Cybertruck prices. This may not be sustainable if brand-new CTs are available directly from Tesla for $100,000.
Future of Cybertruck if price doesn’t come down: Sales of the Cybertruck surpassed the market-leading Ford F-150 Lightning electric pick-up in the second quarter, according to Cox Automotive. But it’s not clear if this can be sustained at $100,000 a pop and up. “I think what we’re seeing is demand from people who want to make [a] statement, not demand from people who make a spreadsheet comparing traits and conclude that the Cybertruck meets their needs better than the Ford or the Rivian,” Sean Tucker, lead editor at Kelley Blue Book, told me last month. While the Cybertruck has already made its mark, its success is uncertain, according to a post on the Car Dealership Guy website. “In spite of its oddities, the Cybertruck has made a cultural impact few other vehicles can boast,” Colin Velez wrote on July 17. “But whether this will continue to fuel sales into the future remains to be seen. The vehicle’s initial six-figure price point, while only temporary, makes its success just as puzzling, as do the mixed reviews from early adopters,” he wrote.
