Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla is all set to enter the Indian market with the inauguration of its maiden showroom at Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai on July 15. The carmaker's first offering here will be the Tesla Model Y.
For reference, the Model Y is the world's largest-selling electric car. It will be sold in India in the completely built-up (CBU) form, with the vehicle reportedly being imported from China.

The Model Y is 4,797 mm long, 1,982 mm wide (with mirrors folded), and 1,624 mm tall. The ground clearance is 167 mm. It either gets 19-inch or 20-inch wheels. The bigger wheels impact the range. Hence, we expect the India-spec units to get 19-inch wheels for a higher range.
Tesla Model Y features
The Model Y is known for its sloping, coupe-like design. The stooping front has an LED strip running across. The car has LED lights at the front and rear. The rear has connected LED taillights. Overall, the exterior design is quite minimalistic.
The interior mimics the exterior in minimalism. A sleek dashboard with a 15.4-inch centre touchscreen infotainment takes the centre stage. Most of the functions can be controlled by the large infotainment unit. You will not find many bells and whistles inside the cabin. At the rear of the front centre armrest, there is another touchscreen unit (8-inch), which is specifically designed for the second-row passengers. Also, the second row is completely foldable.
Tesla Model Y price
The CBU cars up to USD 40,000 attract a basic customs duty of 70% in India. Last month, Bloomberg reported that five Model Y units arrived in Mumbai from Tesla's Shanghai factory and they were declared at just below USD 32,000 each. Hence, we are expecting premium pricing for the Model Y, somewhere in the vicinity of Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom).
