Tesla Inc. is expanding its robotaxi service area in Austin, CEO Elon Musk says.
In a Wednesday night response to a user's post on X praising the Austin-based electric automaker's autonomous ride-hailing service, Musk said robotaxis will be offered in a larger service area this weekend.
The expansion would come three weeks after the service was offered to a handpicked group of about two dozen social media influencers and Tesla fans who regularly post about the Austin-based company. The initial rollout was in an area that goes as far south as Ben White Boulevard and U.S. 290, west to Texas Loop 1, north to Cesar Chavez Street and east to U.S. 183. Musk has made the robotaxi program a priority for the embattled automaker, which has seen plummeting global sales and profit.
Although the Austin trial hasn't had any major glitches, the rollout hasn't been flawless. Videos posted by fans during its first few days of operations show vehicles driving erratically, stopping in intersections and navigating on the wrong side of the road. The incidents quickly drew the attention of federal safety regulators, who asked for more information.
Investors, too, want more information about what the company is doing to boost sales and profitability. They may get answers this fall; according to a Thursday filing, Tesla has scheduled a shareholders meeting Nov. 6.
Musk will face investors before then, though, as Tesla's next quarterly financial report is due July 23.
After releasing first-quarter results, Musk announced he'd be taking a step back from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency, a move investors had called for as his embrace of far-right politics was seen as a major factor in the company's sales slump.
Since then, Musk has had a major falling out with President Donald Trump over the federal budget, which led the president to threaten he might turn DOGE on Musk. Analysts also have concerns the souring relationship could lead to increased regulatory headaches for Tesla and other Musk companies, including SpaceX.
