The Model Y is Teslaâs highest selling global model, and will likely spearhead the brandâs India journey!
For many years, Indians have been waiting for Tesla to arrive in India, and while the American giant has been testing its car on our shores for a while, the launch of any of its cars was always a speculation. The good news now is that Tesla is all set to open its first showroom in India, located in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. The showroom will also serve as an experience centre, allowing you to experience the cars, customize it and get an in-depth understanding of what Tesla cars are all about!
Chances are that Tesla will likely enter the Indian market with the Model Y which has been spotted in India a couple of times. So ahead of its much-awaited launch, here’s all you need to know about the model Y…
Tesla Model Y Design
The Model Y that is coming to India is the facelifted version featuring a modern and minimalist design. It takes design inspiration from the Model 3 Highland. The LED headlights sport a sleek design and the front end has a sharp and upmarket look to it.
The profile features striking alloy wheels which look cool, and the window line tapers upwards as you move towards the rear end. With the facelift, Tesla has focused on aerodynamics to improve efficiency and performance. The rear end features connected LED tail lights, something that you see on most modern day cars.
Tesla Model Y Powertrain
While we do not know the exact specifications of the India-spec model, we know that globally the Model Y facelift comes in two primary variants: a rear-wheel-drive and a long-range dual-motor all-wheel-drive. The former model offers a claimed range of up to 719 km (according to China's CLTC cycle), while the AWD Long Range variant provides roughly 662 km.
The Model Y is quick as well, as it sprints from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds with the RWD configuration and a 4.3 seconds with the AWD system
Tesla In India: Is It For You?
While seeing a Tesla on our roads might be cool, owning it might still not be ideal. Firstly, it is important to note that Tesla cars will be brought in via the CBU route as fully imported models and this means that it will have to undergo heavy taxation. So if you are interested in the Model Y, you will have to churn out Rs 60-70 lakh, or even more! Let’s also keep in mind that the Model Y is an entry-level Tesla and not really the best that the brand has to offer. That being said, it still is an EV that’s pretty impressive if you go by the stats and specs! Its sleek and aerodynamic design will also catch plenty of eyes.
The good thing is that local assembly or even contract manufacturing is planned for the future, so its prices will eventually become more buyer-friendly. While we are as excited as you about Tesla’s entry into the market, it would be interesting to see if the American carmaker can create a successful recipe in India.
What do you think about Tesla’s entry into the Indian market?
