Tech billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla has launched the Model Y SUV in India. The electric-vehicle maker will have two variants of the model on sale - the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) priced at ₹59.89 lakh and the Long Range RWD at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The company opened its first Indian showroom at Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The Model Y starts at $44,990 (approximately ₹38.63 lakh) in the United States, 263,500 yuan (about ₹31.57 lakh) in China, and 45,970 euros (about ₹46.09 lakh) in Germany.
As a result, the Indian model is among the most expensive, owing to import taxes and logistics costs. The on-road prices of the vehicle also differ sharply between cities due to different local taxes and charges.
The high price difference has sparked reactions on social media, with users expressing frustration about the added costs and comparing it to prices in other markets.
A user wrote, “At the American price point, this car would sell like hotcakes in India. But our babus wanna keep pushing Tata and Mahindra down our throat with high duties.”
“Tesla Model Y price: In USA: ₹ 33 Lakh in India: ₹ 69 Lakh. Magic of Nirmala Sitharaman (Good for Indian Automakers),” read another comment.
