The Federal Aviation Administration has completed its investigation of the SpaceX Starship Flight 7 mishap on Jan. 16.There were no public injuries, the FAA said, but one confirmed report of minor vehicle damage in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This was the first of two explosions for SpaceX – the March explosion is still under investigation. "The final mishap report cites the probable root cause for the loss of the Starship vehicle was stronger than anticipated vibrations during flight led to increased stress on, and failure of, the hardware in the propulsion system," the report says. SpaceX identified "11 corrective actions to prevent a reoccurrence of the event." The FAA verified SpaceX implemented corrective actions before Flight 8.Flight 8, however, had its own mishap on March 6."SpaceX may not launch Starship again until the FAA accepts the final mishap investigation report or makes a return to flight determination and all other licensing requirements are met," the report says. Starship coming to FloridaIt might be grounded from flying, but that doesn't mean plans to bring the massive rocket to Florida aren't moving forward. The Starship Gigabay will stand 390 feet tall with approximately 46.5 million cubic feet of interior processing space and 815,000 square feet of workspace. It will be located at Kennedy Space Center, south of the shuttle landing facility, according to SpaceX.A few weeks ago, WESH 2 reported documents from the FAA showing construction for the Gigabay is set to begin April 1. While it was previously listed as a "work in progress," it is now listed as "interim."In a post on X, Gov. Ron DeSantis congratulated SpaceX on its plans to bring operations to Florida. He added, "With leading space companies—now including SpaceX—investing in the Free State of Florida, NASA should scrap their expensive new HQ in D.C. and consider moving to Florida as well."The push to move headquarters has been backed by Space Florida, which said it "makes sense" to have headquarters here. There are some concerns over Starship launches after its test flight ended with a rocket explosion in January."Extensive environmental analysis must be done so the lagoon and infrastructure are protected," research scientist Ken Kremer said. "SpaceX should pay for all improvements. The FAA should not be bullied by Musk."SpaceX said that pending environmental reviews, which are ongoing, it plans to conduct Starship's first Florida launch in late 2025.
