Elon Musk's The Boring Company is coming to Nashville.
The company plans to build a tunnel to help drivers get from downtown Nashville to BNA quickly.
Based on existing Boring Company tunnels, the Nashville tunnel could be a huge win for drivers.
This story has been updated with new information about the Nashville airport tunnel.
Elon Musk's The Boring Company is partnering with the Volunteer State to build an underground tunnel. The tunnel, called the Music City Loop, will span about eight miles from downtown Nashville to the Nashville International Airport.
Musk's Boring Company uses tunnel construction to improve transportation in areas with heavy traffic. So, how would the tunnel impact traffic to airport?
How far is Nashville International Airport from downtown Nashville?
The Nashville International Airport is 6.9 miles away from Broadway in downtown Nashville, according to Google Maps. It can take anywhere between nine to 18 minutes to travel from downtown to the airport with light to moderate traffic. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
While some drivers have a relatively easy time getting to the Nashville airport from downtown, there are still instances of traffic so severe near the airport exit that the travel time has quadrupled. One Reddit thread details several different negative experiences drivers had sitting in traffic while trying to exit to the airport.
Based on the thread, the real issue and need for a tunnel stems from traffic backing up near the airport rather than a steady flow of heavy traffic from downtown to the Nashville airport. An inconveniently-located cell phone lot further exacerbates airport traffic because some drivers refuse to use the lot (since it's so far offsite).
So, 6.9 miles could take drivers over an hour if traffic is backed up near the exit to the BNA and around the airport itself. The Boring Company and its tunnels could help fix this issue by creating an alternative route more than 30 feet below the surface.
For reference, it takes Vegas Loop tunnel takes eight minutes to travel 7.7 miles from downtown Las Vegas to Harry Reid International Airport at a cost of $12 per fare. A similar Tennessee Loop could get drivers from downtown Nashville to Nashville International Airport in eight minutes while also avoiding traffic backups near the airport.
How much will the Nashville Boring Company tunnel cost?
The Boring Company's two-mile loop in Vegas cost about $47 million. It provides access to key locations with transit times ranging "between two and eight minutes" according to the company's website. There are different fares for different tunnel routes and access points, which could be the case for the Nashville tunnel. There's no word on how much Nashville's tunnel will cost yet, but Boring Company Loop tunnels can cost around $10 million per mile, according to Business Insider.
The creation of a tunnel that could bypass the most congested areas on the way to BNA would make the conventional route comparatively inferior. This tunnel may be a costly investment, but some Tennesseans may be willing to pay a fare to get around serious traffic while enjoying one of the most innovative new routes in the country.
Inspired by Musk's frustration with L.A. traffic, The Boring Company aims to make some of the worst commutes and routes completely free of traffic and congestion. It currently operates in Las Vegas, Texas, California, and plans to expand to Dubai.
How to learn more about The Boring Company's Nashville tunnel
The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Nashville International Airport, Music City Center, the Greater Nashville Hospitality Association, and state officials are expected to make an announcement regarding the deal on July 28 at 4 p.m.
Will Elon Musk and The Boring Company be successful in relieving a Nashville transportation pain point, or is this endeavor too bold? One thing's for certain, The Boring Company's tunnel to BNA will be anything but boring.
