Plans call for Tesla vehicles to shuttle passengers between downtown Nashville and Tennessee’s largest airport in trips lasting eight to 10 minutes. The same commute between the airport and the downtown Convention Center currently takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic.Officials from The Boring Co. told The Tennessean that there will be no road closures or impacts from construction.
“We started to look for another place where we should go, and there were really only two requirements: The system had to be useful, and the community had to be welcoming,” Boring Co. President and CEO Steve Davis said at a press conference.
The loop will be all electric and have zero emissions, according to Lee’s announcement.
The estimated cost for the project hasn’t been publicly shared, but The Boring Co. is reportedly incurring all costs. During a Monday press conference, lawmakers and The Boring Co. officials did not share details on any incentives The Boring Co. receives.
An exact path for the tunnel has not been determined.
Would The Boring Co. build tunnels in Texas?
In short: Musk wants to.
The world’s richest person has expressed interest in several markets — including Texas — as potential locations for Boring Co. tunnels. So far, however, none of those plans have materialized.
The Boring Co. has been in discussions with San Antonio for several years to create a downtown-to-airport tunnel in the city. The project’s peak cost was estimated to be over $60 million for the first phase. It has been three years since county or company officials have provided details about the proposed San Antonio project.
After having already entered an agreement and spending $50,000, the city of Kyle scrapped plans for a pedestrian tunnel to be built by the company. According to city officials, Union Pacific, which manages railroad tricks that the tunnel would cut under, declined the city’s request.
If the Music City Loop comes to fruition, Nashville will be the second city to have a tunnel with The Boring Co.
The other is a system made up of three tunnel projects in Las Vegas and known as the Vegas Loop, the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop and the Resorts World Connector. The 1.7-mile Vegas Convention Center Loop cost about $47 million to construct and opened in 2021.
Musk’s tunneling venture has drawn controversy since its inception. The Boring Co., which was originally a subsidiary of his rocket company SpaceX, was founded by the tech billionaire in 2017.
Despite receiving safety stamps of approval, the process for building the Las Vegas tunnels came under fire for worker safety violations and concerns, with the project being cited for numerous violations that included injuries and exposure to hazardous materials.
Some critics object to the privatization of infrastructure, noting that the tunnels would be built and operated by Musk’s privately held company and rely exclusively on vehicles from his automaker, Tesla.
