Tesla is reportedly evaluating the possibility of launching a smaller electric pickup truck following the Cybertruck’s lackluster sales performance. The move comes as the company looks to better align its product offerings with evolving market demands and expand its presence in the electric pickup segment.
At a recent event held for Tesla owners and investors in California, Lars Moravy, Vice President of Engineering at Tesla, acknowledged the challenges associated with the Cybertruck’s large size. “We always talked about making a smaller pickup,” Moravy said, hinting at the company’s ongoing exploration of more compact alternatives. He added that Tesla’s design studio is actively working on potential concepts for a mid-size truck that could serve both passenger and cargo transport needs.
The Cybertruck, initially envisioned as a game-changer in the pickup market, has not met Tesla’s sales expectations. While the company initially targeted an annual production of 250,000 units with a long-term goal of 500,000 units per year, current sales are reported to be around 20,000 units annually. The Cybertruck's limited appeal can be attributed to its unconventional design, high price, and size, which may not suit all markets or consumer preferences.
Moravy noted that the potential demand for a smaller truck could also tie into Tesla’s broader vision of future mobility, including the development of robotaxis. A more compact and versatile pickup could fill a gap in Tesla’s current lineup, which lacks a dedicated delivery or utility vehicle. “We’ve definitely been churning in the design studio about what we might do to serve that need,” he said.
A mid-size electric truck from Tesla could better compete with popular models such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV, although no official timeline or production plans have been confirmed.
