2012. Tesla rolls out the Model S and changes the game. The Tesla Model X wasn’t far behind. Fast-forward 13 years, and the automaker has stopped taking orders for the duo in Europe. Even California customers are looking at delays. But is the murky Model X and Model S landscape an indication that the EV models are on their way out?
No more Tesla Model S and Model X orders in Europe
Earlier this week, Tesla announced that it would stop taking orders for the Model S and Model X from European buyers. While alarming, it’s not likely to be the end of the two as we know it.
Now, the Model S and Model X are the automaker’s worst sellers by volume. European sales are down across the board. But even in the US, buyers took home around 32,281 of the two EVs combined, around 6,684 fewer than the oft-jested-about Cybertruck.
That said, this isn’t the first time Tesla has stopped taking orders for its two OG EVs in Europe. Nearly four years ago, following the last update, the electric automaker put a lid on deliveries for longer than anticipated.
But orders continued after almost nine months of stagnation. In June, however, Tesla set forth updating the Model S and Model X. And, not unlike the previous refresh timeframe, Tesla has stopped taking orders in Europe again.
Long waits in the US
It’s not just Europeans who are having a hard time getting their hands on a Model S or Model X, though. Electrek reported that interested buyers are looking at a two-month wait time for a new, refreshed Model S in California, where the two luxury models roll out of the Fremont factory.
In short, Tesla may be shifting priorities to meet American demand for its two longest-running luxury EV models. Halted orders in Europe, along with ramped-up production at Fremont, could be just what the brand needs to catch up with stateside orders. Only time will tell if Tesla makes moves on behalf of the two EV models, or if they disappear after this refresh has run its course.
