We put a lot of trust in our favorite celebrities.
Scammers know that, and they're trying to exploit that trust with celebrity imposter scams.
Bentley University professor and creator of scamicide.com Steve Weisman said with artificial intelligence advancing so rapidly, it's nearly impossible to figure out what's real.
“AI and voice cloning has made this kind of celebrity scam so, so believable,” said Weisman. “There was one where Taylor Swift on social media was giving away free cookware, you just had to pay for the shipping and handling.”
He continued, “Taylor Swift wasn't giving away free cookware, but it was Taylor Swift that you saw, it was Taylor Swift that you heard in the social media posts that were doing this.”
