KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. (CBS12) —
NASA's SpaceX Crew-11 mission, which was expected to launch and head to the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, has been cancelled due to weather.
The liftoff was scheduled for Thursday at 12:09 p.m. from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
On Wednesday, NASA said that the weather looked promising for the launch, with the U.S. Space Force’s 45th Weather Squadron forecasting a 90% chance of favorable conditions at the launch site.
However, officials said that the primary concern remains the cumulus cloud rule, which was the ultimate reason it was cancelled.
CBS12 News' meteorologist Charlotte Carl explained cumulus clouds formed due to the seabreeze collision - where the wind coming off the coast and the winds blowing onshore meet and cause rising air which develops clouds.
Because of the cool temperatures atop the cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds near the launch site, the clouds are tall which can pose a threat to the safety of the launch.
On board the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will be NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, along with Kimiya Yui from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Oleg Platonov from Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.
This mission marks the 11th crew rotation flight to the ISS as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, per NASA.
