[Elias Weiss] A gray Tesla smashed into the back of a gray Lexus sedan about 11:45 a.m. today on John Wayne Parkway at Cobblestone Farms Drive South, drawing a large police and fire response and slowing traffic through the busy intersection. Three Maricopa police units blocked off westbound Cobblestone Farms Drive at noon while drivers were rerouted through the Cobblestone Fiesta shopping center to reconnect with Cobblestone Farms Drive. All lanes of John Wayne Parkway remained open. The collision deployed the Tesla’s airbags. The male driver was evaluated by paramedics on the side of the road for 20 minutes. He appeared alert but shaken as ambulance lights strobed and a gurney stood ready feet away. [Elias Weiss] The driver ultimately declined transport after being checked at the scene. The Lexus (not pictured) sustained heavy rear-end damage and was disabled along John Wayne Parkway. A Maricopa Fire/Medical Department ladder truck responded from the Alterra fire station. Several witnesses gathered nearby, speaking with officers as the investigation continued early this afternoon. “The lanes have reopened as they were able to push the crash to the shoulder as they await the tow truck,” said an MFMD spokesperson at 12:18 p.m. The cause of the crash and whether impairment was a factor are under investigation.
