Amazon has renamed its Project Kuiper satellite broadband program to Amazon Leo, marking a shift from a secretive R&D phase to full-scale commercial rollout.
The rebrand, which ramps up the pressure on Elon Musk’s Starlink, highlights Amazon’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) approach and comes as the tech giant prepares to deploy a constellation of more than 3,200 satellites, offering speeds up to 400Mbps.
More than 150 production satellites are already in orbit following six successful launches, including several using SpaceX’s own Falcon 9 rockets.
One of the biggest early winners is Australia.
Under a landmark agreement with NBN Co, Amazon Leo will replace the heavily criticised Sky Muster service, delivering high-speed broadband to more than 300,000 regional, rural and remote customers.
Amazon pitches its constellation as a more scalable, lower-cost alternative to traditional satellite designs – an advantage it says is critical for sparsely populated markets like Australia.
Amazon Leo vice-president Chris Weber said the service is built on the belief “everyone in the world should have access to high-speed internet,” from major tech hubs to remote farms.
And farms are exactly where Amazon is headed next.
The company has secured a partnership with Australian ag-tech outfit Connected Farms, which will use Amazon Leo to power its CommsXtend platform, delivering rugged, IP67-rated terminals built to withstand dust, rain, vibration and the harsh conditions of agricultural machinery.
The rollout adds new momentum to Amazon’s campaign to become a major satellite internet provider alongside early partners such as JetBlue and L3Harris.
But despite the progress, Amazon faces a steep climb. Starlink already operates thousands more satellites globally and dominates consumer uptake.
Connected Farms will begin Amazon Leo pilot deployments in the UK and North America in 2026, while Australian customers can expect NBN-backed service availability as Amazon ramps up launches through next year.
