X hit with $140m EU fine over illegal online content

The European Union has fined Elon Musk’s social media platform X $140 million for violating online content regulations. The fine comes after a two-year investigation. EU authorities said X failed to control illegal and harmful content, including misinformation and abusive material.
The European Commission explained that X did not take effective measures to remove dangerous posts or restrict harmful content. Elon Musk responded by defending freedom of speech. He said expression is the foundation of democracy. Meanwhile, U.S. officials criticized the penalty, calling it biased against American companies and overly punitive.
The EU emphasized that the fine is not directed at any country. It aims to enforce the Digital Services Act and ensure social media platforms comply with European rules.
