A SpaceX Starship test flight exploded less than ten minutes after liftoff, sending debris across Caribbean airspace and creating a dangerous situation for multiple passenger aircraft mid-flight.
U.S. officials confirmed that three passenger planes carrying nearly 450 people were directly threatened, including a JetBlue flight heading to San Juan, as debris scattered unexpectedly through the sky.
Meanwhile, air traffic controllers warned the JetBlue crew they were flying at their own risk, forcing pilots to choose between navigating debris or risking fuel shortages over open ocean. Read more : NASA considers dropping SpaceX from Artemis III moon mission
As the situation worsened, controllers rushed to impose a temporary no-fly zone, while one pilot issued a Mayday call after being instructed to consider an emergency landing.
In addition, an Iberia Airlines flight and a private jet faced similar fuel emergencies, although all aircraft landed safely after quick coordination prevented mid-air proximity risks.
Following the incident, regulators noted delayed notification from SpaceX, prompting renewed scrutiny into debris management, as investigators review safety gaps exposed by the failed test flight.
