NASA is set to commence its first ever medical evacuation of the International Space Station. The Crew-11 astronauts will depart the space station today (January 14) and return to Earth on a SpaceX Dragon capsule.
It comes after space agency confirmed last week an astronaut on board the station suffered a 'serious medical condition'. Dr James Polk, NASA's chief health and medical officer told reporters the astronaut, who has not been named for privacy reasons, was in a stable condition on board the station.
"It's not an emergency evacuation, but we are erring on the side of caution for the crew member," he added. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said: "Obviously, this was a serious medical condition. That is why we're pursuing this path."
"The capability to diagnose and treat this properly does not live on the International Space Station," he added. "We’re always going to do the right thing for our astronauts, but it’s recognising it’s the end of the Crew-11 mission right now."
