SAN FRANCISCO – A US court dismissed Elon Musk’s $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI, ruling in favour of the artificial intelligence company he helped co-found, the local media reported on Tuesday.
A California jury rejected all claims filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI, its chief executive Sam Altman, and co-founder Greg Brockman.
The court held that the case was filed after the expiration of the legally allowed time period, and therefore the claims were not admissible on procedural grounds. The decision means the jury did not examine the substance of the allegations.
Musk had accused OpenAI’s leadership of breaching its founding principles by allegedly benefiting from the company’s transition from a non-profit research organisation to a for-profit structure. He argued that the shift undermined the original mission of developing artificial intelligence for public benefit.
However, the court’s ruling removes a major legal challenge facing OpenAI at a time when the company is experiencing rapid growth and heightened competition in the global artificial intelligence sector.
The decision comes amid increasing rivalry in the AI industry, where major technology firms are investing heavily in advanced systems and expanding their market presence.
OpenAI has not issued an immediate public response to the ruling, while further legal clarifications and developments in the case are expected in the coming days.
