Despite Tesla’s advanced driving technology, the company’s guidelines state drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control of the vehicle at all times.
The California Highway Patrol also warned that sleeping behind the wheel—even in a vehicle equipped with autonomous or autopilot features—violates state law.
“Regardless of any special features a vehicle may possess, such as autopilot or fully autonomous capabilities, drivers are still responsible for the vehicle they are operating. If a driver is asleep behind the wheel, they are in violation of California’s basic speed law,” CHP said.
The video quickly sparked concern online as Tesla’s self-driving capabilities continue to face scrutiny amid ongoing debates over the safety of autonomous vehicle technology.
