Elon Musk, world’s one of the wealthiest man, has publicly welcomed the Lahore High Court’s decision to uphold the death sentences awarded to the convicts in Pakistan’s high-profile motorway gang rape case.
The court on Wednesday dismissed appeals filed by convicts Abid Malhi and Shafqat Baga, who had challenged the punishment handed down to them in the case.
Reacting to the development on social media, Musk described the ruling as a courageous decision and suggested that Western countries could learn from such actions.
“Bravo Pakistan! This is what we should be doing in the West,” he wrote on X.
His comments came in response to a post by British politician Rupert James Graham.
Graham, who leads the political party Restore Britain, referred to the court’s ruling as positive news from Pakistan. His party advocates restoring public trust in governance and promoting accountability at the local level.
The case dates back to March 20, 2021, when an anti-terrorism court sentenced the two men to death after finding them guilty of rape. A few days later, on March 25, 2021, the convicts challenged the verdict before the Lahore High Court.
With the dismissal of their appeals, the death sentences awarded by the trial court remain in place.
