community, even Tesla fans criticizing Supercar Ron for the uninspired modifications that ultimately affected the Cybertruck's reputation. However, a growing number of critics point to Tesla skimping on proper underbody protection. Having the battery pack exposed and only an aluminum skid plate in front is not enough for a tough pickup truck that is supposed to be apocalypse-proof. No wonder some owners set their Cybertruck on fire after hitting the battery with hard objects.
Many pointed to Rivian's measures to ensure the R1T's survivability in rough terrain. The EV startup offers an All-Terrain package that includes a reinforced underbody shield, 20-inch All-Terrain wheels with a matching full-size spare, and a built-in compressor. This probably explains why we haven't heard of an off-road incident involving battery damage yet. In the meantime, the Cybertruck offers no underbody protection, no spare tire and no built-in compressor. At $3,950, Rivian's All-Terrain Package is not cheap, but it provides peace of mind to people who need extra protection.
Cybertruck's lead engineer, Wes Morrill, also saw the video and rightfully pointed to Cybertruck's modifications that ultimately caused Ron's Cybertruck to fail. He also said that Tesla will offer battery armor and rock sliders as a retrofit by the end of the year. It's unclear why this didn't happen earlier, especially as Tesla had five full years to figure out before deliveries started, plus the good example Rivian set. Until beefier protection becomes available, it's probably best not to drive the Cybertruck off-road and, more importantly, not remove the original front bumper and skid plate. Especially if you plan to drive through fences.
Battery armor and Rock sliders will be available as a retrofit option end of this year. Also if you plan to drive into fences probably best not to remove the front bumper and aluminum skid plate that come stock.
