Irvine Police Department
The department said of the program: "For decades, our DARE officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite students.
"IPD believes in the continual education of students and is one of only two DARE programs in the entire state."
Newsweek has contacted the Irvine Police Department for comment via email.
While it won't be used as a standard patrol car, the department said the Cybertruck is capable of responding to emergencies if required.
"These vehicles draw a crowd with custom graphics and features that pique the curiosity of car enthusiasts of all ages," Kent said, according to The Orange County Register.
"We have seen time and time again how engaging the community breaks down barriers and builds trust between the police and those that we serve."
A fact sheet about the vehicle provided by IPD to The Orange County Register said Tesla estimates the department will save up to $6,000 in gas over five years, and the department expects the truck to remain in service for 10 years.
"The Cybertruck is a replacement for another DARE vehicle that has reached its shelf life," department spokesperson sergeant Karie Davies told NBC News in an email.
In a fact sheet distributed to the media, the department put the cost of the truck in context, explaining that the more commonly used Ford Police Interceptor costs $116,000, and only remains in service for around three or four years.
"We are thrilled to introduce this vehicle to our community and will be hosting pop-up events in the coming weeks so you can take photos and meet our officers," IPD said in their social media statement.
