Tesla has axed the base Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variants of the Model 3 and Model Y from its lineup in Canada, replacing them with new Long Range RWD models (via Tesla North).
The move comes after the federal government slapped a 100% surtax on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) back in August. Tesla’s entry-level Model 3 and Model Y are built in and imported from the company’s Chinese Gigafactory in Shanghai.
This also means that there will no longer be any Tesla EVs with next-generation LFP batteries — which are currently only being produced at Giga Shanghai — available in Canada (at least until Tesla moves its LFP battery supply chain to the West).
Trudeau’s new EV tariffs went into effect on October 1. Tesla has taken similar steps in the U.S., which also imposed tariffs on EVs with Chinese components.
The new Model Y Long Range RWD boasts 525km of range and goes 0-100 kph in 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 217km/h. It starts at $59,990 CAD.
On the other hand, the Model 3 Long Range RWD starts at $54,990 CAD, a $4,000 price increase from the outgoing Model 3 RWD. It features an estimated 584km of range (161km more than the variant it replaces) and goes 0-100 kph in just 5.2 seconds.
Both the new Model 3 and Model Y Long Range RWD variants qualify for the $5,000 federal iZEV rebate.
With both Canada and the U.S. thrusting heavy tariffs on to Chinese-made EVs, Tesla is quickly shuffling its offerings in Western markets to maintain the affordability of its vehicles.
