Rate Story But the bacteria would likely be too deep for the Europa Clipper to see.
The $5.2 billion mission Europa Clipper is the biggest spacecraft NASA has ever built for a planetary mission, measuring about 100 feet (30.5 meters) long, about 58 feet (17.6 meters) wide and weighing approximately 13,000 pounds (6,000 kg), reported news agency Reuters. It is larger than a basketball court because of its sizable solar arrays to gather sunlight for powering scientific instruments, electronics and its other subsystems.
Roughly 50 flybys
Though the spacecraft Europa won't be landing but will perform around 50 flybys over four years, coming as close as 25 kilometers (16 miles) above the surface. During these flybys, the probe will be exposed to significant radiation, comparable to several million chest x-rays with each pass.
Some 4,000 people have been working on the $5.2 billion mission for around a decade. NASA says the investment is justified by the importance of the data that will be collected.
If our solar system turns out to be home to two habitable worlds (Europa and Earth), "think of what that means when you extend that result to the billions and billions of other solar systems in this galaxy," said Niebur, the Europa Clipper program scientist.
