The operator of an NJ Transit light rail train was killed and 23 passengers were injured Monday when the River Line train struck a part of a tree on the track in Burlington County, officials said.
The southbound light rail train hit the tree log at 6:04 a.m. north of the Roebling station in Florence, NJ Transit officials said.
After the crash, 23 of the 42 passengers were treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, NJ Transit officials said. Officials revised the total number of injured passengers several times during the morning as investigators arrived at the scene.
Service was suspended between Trenton and Florence as of 8 a.m. Substitute bus service was being provided.
NJ Transit officials are investigating how the tree ended up on the track.
A portion of Route 130 south in Burlington Township is closed as a result of the NJ Transit crash, local police said.
Gov. Phil Murphy said he was updated on the crash.
“I have been briefed on an accident on NJ Transit River Line Light Rail earlier today in which the light rail struck a tree on the tracks, leading to the death of the train operator and injuring passengers,” Murphy said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.
“An investigation is underway. Our prayers are with all affected by this tragic incident,” Murphy said.
